Utilising world leading engineering, construction management and project managmeent tools and resources the project was delivered to specification and is considered of world world class quality standard.

Through the implementation of our propriety Major Accident Prevention (MAP) HSE system, we were able to fulfil our goal of Zero Harm with no lost time injuries (LTIs) over duration of the project.

Clough Limited together with Transfield Services in a joint venture, was awarded a construction contract as part of QGC Pty Limited’s Queensland Curtis Liquefied Natural Gas (QCLNG) Project.

Stage one work commenced in the fourth quarter of 2012 and included early site civil works and front end planning work for the construction phase of compression facilities in central Queensland. QCLNG was one of the world’s first projects to turn coal seam gas into LNG. The project involves expanding QGC’s existing coal seam gas production in the Surat Basin of southern Queensland, building a 540 km natural gas pipeline network and constructing a natural gas liquefaction plant on Curtis Island, near Gladstone, where the gas will be converted to LNG for export.

The award of the contract, followed the successful completion of the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase of the project.

Work included hydrocarbon transportation pipes, linking pipelines from the south east Mananda oil fields to the existing Agogo and Kutubu processing facilities.

Clough Seymour Whyte Constructions

In joint venture with Queensland civil contractors, Seymour Whyte Constructions, Clough was awarded contract for a section of the Brisbane Inner Northern Busway. Located in Herston, northwest of Brisbane, this section is the segment of the busway route, providing rapid transit for bus commuters from Brisbane City to the inner northern suburbs. Awarded in Q3 2002, the project incorporated the design, construction and commissioning of a 1.6 km dual lane carriageway and associated works. The busway passes through the environmental sensitive Victoria Park golf course and parklands setting. In addition to associated roadworks, the contract also included major structures consisting of three bridges and two ‘cut and cover’ tunnels with a combined length of some 400 m. The construction of a unique busway protection screen ensures the safety of commuters and busway infrastructure from the adjacent golf course operations.

As part of a broad program of improvements to public transport infrastructure in Perth, Clough was awarded the contract to design and construct Stage One of the Kwinana Freeway Bus Transitway, in conjunction with joint venture partner Henry Walker Eltin Contracting Pty Ltd.

The scope included the design and construction of two 6km dedicated bus lanes, a passenger transfer station, a bus-only bridge, three new footbridges, modifications to an existing footbridge and widening of the existing Canning Highway overpass to accommodate a dedicated bus lane and passenger platform.

Baulderstone Clough Joint Venture

The Baulderstone Clough Joint Venture was commissioned by Main Roads Western Australia to design and construct Phase 1 of the major Graham Farmer Freeway Project. The Phase 1 bypass links into the Mitchell Freeway and extends to East Parade in East Perth

The scope included:

  • Tie-in roadworks;
  • Pedestrian traffic ramps and bridges;
  • Western and eastern tunnel portals and approaches;
  • A 250 m rail tunnel and railway realignment;
  • Relocation of existing services;
  • Signalling, signage and landscaping.

This 688m long, 28.8m wide bridge was designed to accommodate six lanes of traffic. An unusual feature of the design was the provision of pedestrian walkways and cycle ways cantilevered from the lower flanges of the superstructure. The construction consisted of nine continuous spans of precast double-cell single box post-tensioned concrete segments, supported by sculptured reinforced concrete piers.
A significant achievement of the construction work was the employment of a technique developed by Clough to support each stage of the erection of the superstructure. A 500 tonne steel falsework truss, which was floated into position on barges, was suspended from the end of the previously completed stage of the superstructure to the next pier and cantilevered forward to the end of this stage.
The truss was cable stayed for additional support from a 34m high tower on the previous pier. The tower was guyed with back-stay cables that were tightened with hydraulic jacks as the weight of the precast deck was added to the truss.

Clough undertook the construction of a five-span continuous pre stressed concrete bridge crossing the Swan River in Perth.
The bridge is comprised of five spans (48.8m, 70m, 97.6m, 70m, 48.8m). Its eight rows of beams, made up of precast segments 2.97m long and of varying depth, weigh up to 20 tonnes each. The bridge is post-tensioned longitudinally using the Gifford – Udall 19 wire 18mm diameter strand system, developed especially for the project.

At the time of its opening, the Narrows Bridge was the largest precast pre-stressed continuous beam bridge in Australia.
