Boddington recognised for Engineering Excellence

23 September 2010

Boddington Gold Mine expansion project took out the resource development category award in the recent Engineers Australia WA Engineering Excellence Awards held in Perth.

Recognised as an engineering feat, Newmont’s Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) represents a revolutionary approach to gold and copper production, employing high pressure grinding equipment never before used in the gold mining industry.

The project was dedicated to maintaining the safety and well being of employees and contractors, implementing innovative campaigns to keep the safety message fresh. With over 12,000 individuals contributing to the project during the construction phase, Boddington achieved 14 million work hours without a lost time injury during construction.

Engineering and construction of the expansion project was undertaken by a joint venture between Aker Solutions, Clough, and Murray and Roberts, and provided a fantastic opportunity for young engineers to gain real world, on-site experience, working on a major resource development. This enabled the fast-tracking of young careers, with the opportunity to excel in roles of unfamiliar seniority, learning alongside seasoned professionals.

“As an engineering-led EPC contractor, Clough is delighted to be recognised alongside client Newmont and joint venture partners Aker Solutions and Murray & Roberts, for our contribution to this world class project” said Clough’s Chief Executive Officer, John Smith.

The project is the culmination of 10 years work and the contribution of over 12,000 individuals. At peak production the plant will process over 35 million tonnes of ore per annum.
